Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

The purpose of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is to ensure the proper care, use, and humane treatment of animals used in research, testing, and education. This institution has established an animal care program that is managed in accord with the GUIDE, and in compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, such as the federal Animal Welfare Regulations, and The Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Copies are available in the IACUC office (Education Building, room 125B).

Some of the committe's functions include inspection of facilities, evaluation of programs and animal-activity areas, preparation and submission of reports to institutional officials, and review of proposed use of animals in research, testing, or education.

All VA funded animal protocols must use the VA ACORP forms and must be approved by the VA IACUC, regardless of where the animals are housed. Please refer to the MOU for the protocol review process. If you have questions regarding the reviewing process, please contact the IACUC Coordinator at 352-548-6481.

VA ACORP forms must be electronically sent as unsigned MS Word documents to the IACUC Coordinator two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled IACUC meeting. Please refer to dates and deadlines. The coordinator will arrange the required veterinary review, and provide the veterinarian's comments to the investigator. Once the investigator addresses the comments, the revised documents should be sent back to the IACUC Coordinator, who will add the protocol to the agenda for the next scheduled IACUC meeting. After the protocol has been reviewed by the full committee, the coordinator will provide the investigator with a written summary of the committee's official action.

Following approval from the IACUC, final approval must be granted by the Research and Development Committee (R&DC). Protocol work must not be initiated prior to final R&DC approval.
