Hospice and Palliative Care

About the Program

The Hospice and Palliative Care Unit (HPCU) is a 15-bed short stay, inpatient unit located at the Lake City VA Medical Center Community Living Center (CLC). The Hospice and Palliative Care Unit specializes in the care of Veterans who are dealing with life limiting illnesses and need assistance with various types of symptom management. Veterans life expectancy (less than 6-months) as well as goals and directives of care should be congruent with Hospice Care. The goal of a HPCU admission is to assist the veteran with improving their quality of life with comfort care, in addition to providing educational, psychosocial and spiritual support to Veterans, families and/or caregivers.

Of our 15 beds, 6 are private rooms. All rooms have a sofa bed or chair to accommodate overnight visitor, if desired. We strive to keep each room private, but at times we do have double occupancy. We have a family room, a kitchen/dining room and screened in porch for veterans and their families/friends to enjoy.. We provide a caring environment where the goals of care are focused on comfort care. We work closely with area hospice teams and can assist with transitioning the Veteran to our Hospice and Palliative Unit or closer to home.
