VA Hosts POW/MIA Virtual Recognition Day Ceremonies

September 16, 2020

GAINESVILLE/LAKE CITY, FL— On Friday, September 18 at 10:00 a.m. the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System (NF/SGVHS) will share a virtual pre-recorded video of its 2020 Annual Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW-MIA) Recognition Ceremonies.

This day is to honor all former American prisoners of war, those their families who have endured uncommon sacrifices on behalf of the country.

The virtual video will feature a formal address from Thomas Wisnieski, NF/SGVHS Director, an interview with Kenneth Bowen, former POW, and the traditional Fallen Comrade Table ceremony done in honor by the Gainesville Korean War Veterans Association.

Kenneth Bowen was a US Navy Steelworker 2nd Class (DV) on TWA Flight 847 that was hijacked by Hezbollah and Islamic Jihad-affiliated terrorist. “The rest of the 17 days run together in my memory. Each night would bring about Terror and uncertainty” stated Bowmen.  On July 2, 1985, Bowmen stepped back onto American soil again. “I will never forget what it feels like to look death in the face and prepare to face whatever is going to come next”.

The event video will be posted on the NF/SGVHS’s Facebook page at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 18.
