March 8, 2021

Print Version (PDF)

North Florida/ South Georgia Veterans Health System (NF/SGVHS) will begin COVID-19 vaccination with the Janssen vaccine on March 9, 2021 following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Emergency Use Authorization for this vaccine.

In clinical trials, the Janssen vaccine showed an 85% efficacy in preventing severe/critical COVID-19 disease occurring at least 28 days after vaccination (note: Efficacy between vaccines are not comparable. All phase 3 trials differed by calendar time, geography, and different circulating variants. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice states no preference for any of the three authorized vaccines.).

“Our health system is eager to be able to offer a third highly effective vaccine to more Veterans,” said Thomas Wisnieski, health system director. “This one-dose vaccine will be offered at our community-based outpatient clinics and help us reach our ultimate goal of offering the COVID-19 vaccine to all Veterans and employees who want to be vaccinated.”

As of March 8, 2021, NF/SGVHS provided Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccine first doses to more than 32,400 Veterans and employees— and both doses to more than 18,800 of these individuals.

Veterans who are enrolled and receiving health care in VA are eligible to get the vaccine. Veterans can call 352-548-6000 ext. 103755 to schedule an appointment. The three approved vaccines availability will vary by location. Veterans may also notify their primary care team of their interest in receiving the vaccine.
