Build a Better Breakfast

Eating right and being fit are keys to staying healthy throughout life. Because our nutrient needs change as we get older, it is important to know which foods offer the vitamins and minerals that will promote good health as we age.

Rev up your body’s engine with a healthy breakfast!  Eating a balanced breakfast can supply you with the energy you need to get you through the morning.  Aim for food from the different food groups (grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, meat and beans) for meal balance.

Studies show that those who incorporate a balanced breakfast into their eating plan are less likely to suffer from overweight or obesity; so try out some of these quick-fix, healthy breakfast ideas to jump-start your day!

  • Peanut butter-banana toast on whole wheat bread. Not a fan of banana, try sliced strawberries or peach!
  • Instant oatmeal with a couple of tablespoons of dried fruit, such as cranberries or raisins and a handful of nuts such as walnuts.  Add a “special something” with a dash of cinnamon!
  • Fruit smoothie made with low-fat milk or yogurt, some of your favorite fruits such as frozen strawberries and/or fresh banana and ice.
  • Egg sandwich on a whole wheat English muffin with a side of strawberries or orange slices.  The vitamin C from the fruit will help your body better absorb the iron in the egg.
  • Low-fat or non-fat yogurt with added fruit and either a crunchy cereal or a handful of nuts, such as almonds.
  • Bowl of whole grain, low sugar cereal with low-fat milk and fresh fruit such as sliced bananas, strawberries or blueberries.
  • Low-fat cottage cheese mixed with chopped pineapple and a side of whole grain toast.
