Objectives
This specialized pharmacy residency training program is directed toward developing advanced knowledge and skills in the area of critical care pharmacotherapy. The residency will provide extensive clinical experience and applied research training for a pharmacist desiring a career in this area of specialization. The ultimate goal of the program is to enable the resident to become a knowledgeable, effective, and ethical, proactive patient advocate. This includes providing efficacious pharmacotherapy, patient education, and protection of patient's right to privacy.

Facilities
The VA Medical Center in Gainesville is the primary training site for this residency program. The medical center consists of a 230 bed acute care medical, surgical and psychiatric service section, a 34 bed geriatric care unit, and a complete ambulatory care service.
Responsibilities
The resident will use critical care environments to develop competencies in clinical pharmacy practice. These areas include the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CTICU), the Emergency Department and nutrition support. Residents actively participate in ward rounds, attending rounds, case conferences, and educational meetings. Opportunities for involvement in activities of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee and Medication Use Evaluation Committee are provided.
Qualifications and Eligibility of the Applicant
Applicants are required to hold an advanced degree from a college of pharmacy accredited by the American Council of Pharmaceutical Education must be a United States citizen and have completed a PGY1 residency prior to beginning this program. The applicant should have completed formal academic instruction in pathophysiology, pharmacokinetics, pharmacotherapeutics, communication techniques, drug literature evaluation, and drug study design. The applicant must demonstrate the ability to work effectively as part of a health care team, deal with patients and personnel in a professional and tactful manner, and exercise good judgment. Demonstration of leadership and initiative in situations where independent action is warranted are also required.
