SERVICES

Nursing is a clinical discipline supported by administration, education and research. The goal of nursing is to deliver necessary care and services to veterans and families in a satisfying manner. Services include acute, episodic, chronic illness, wellness and palliative care. Nursing care is defined as the RN’s legally authorized practice focused on the diagnostic, prescriptive, and evaluative patterns required by nursing care standards. Licensed practical nurses and nursing assistants or health care technicians augment nursing care within their education and competency capabilities under the direction of a registered nurse. Nursing is provided through the nursing process of assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating care to patients and families. Activities provided by members of the nursing staff are independent, dependent, interdependent, and collaborative in nature.

Nursing Service is a distinct clinical service accountable to the Director. The Associate Director for Nursing Services is responsible for developing, administering and evaluating a comprehensive program that meets the nursing care requirements of patients throughout the integrated system. The Associate Director for Nursing Services is the primary resource for assuring consistency of nursing standards for all nursing staff within the System. Collaborative activities have been established for nurses outside of Nursing Service to ensure accountability for standards of practice, competency, and licensure.
