The purpose of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is to ensure the proper care, use, and humane treatment of animals used in research, testing, and education. This institution has established an animal care program that is managed in accord with the GUIDE, and in compliance with applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations, such as the federal Animal Welfare Regulations, and The Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Use of Laboratory Animals. Copies are available in the IACUC office, E573-1.
Some of the many functions include inspection of facilities; evaluation of programs and animal-activity areas; preparation and submission of reports to institutional officials; review of proposed uses of animals in research, testing, or education.
All VA funded animal protocols must use the VA ACORP forms and must be approved by the VA IACUC regardless of where the animals are housed. Please refer to the MOU for the protocol review process. If you have questions regarding the reviewing process, please contact the IACUC Coordinator at ext. 6481.
VA ACORP forms must be electronically sent to the IACUC Coordinator two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled IACUC meeting. Please refer to dates and deadlines. He will arrange the veterinary consultation and will send the veterinary comments back to the investigator. Once the investigator addresses the comments, they are sent back to the IACUC Coordinator, who will put the protocol on the agenda for the next scheduled IACUC meeting. After the protocol has been reviewed by the entire IACUC, he will inform the investigator, in writing, the status of their protocol. Final approval still has to be granted by the Research and Development Committee prior to the initiation of the protocol."
